   Scandinavian Design

Born in the 1930s, Scandinavian design belongs to modernism, a movement marked by functionalism and simplification of forms, that he tried to humanize by the use of natural materials (wood, leather, hemp, etc.) and to democratize by the use of innovative techniques to make objects in series at reasonable prices.

The purpose of Scandinavian design is to improve the daliy life and many designer have therefore focoused on the interiors: furniture, lighting, texiles, dishes,. etc. In theirs works, we often find an strong relationship with nature shapes(curved shore of a lake, tree bark, plant frgments, etc.)

The first golden age of Scandinavian design extends from 1930s to 1970s. Its founders are called Alvar Aalto, Hans J. Wegner, etc. These precursors have provided the model and set of values which still inspire the new scandinavian design:durability, functionality, reliability - but also less tangible values such as simplicity, equalify, joy, courage, daily pleasure visible through the simple forms, not ostentatious and often colorful forms.

Danish Design

The following is a description of some of the most noticeable efforts made to create a carpentry tradition in Denmark. It is not an uninterrupted tradition, but a line can be traced back to the decades before and after 1800, where with support from the Danish government, carpentry craftsmanship was improved and a standard was set. It is a carpentry culture which today is considered a Danish tradition, and which in the 1940’s and 1950’s included Denmark in the history of furniture design. It is on the basis of this century-old tradition that architect Kaare Klint in the years around the first World War began his studies of the craftsmanship and quality which was expressed in both the English designer furniture and in Chinese furniture’s simplified character. Naturally, one cannot justify the culture-historical development in this short summary, which is why the interested reader can study the more complete collection of literature on the subject found in the hotel’s library or on the Internet.
